In preparation for the eventual travel intensive nature of my life, I have changed by home phone number.

And the bonus is - I have made it easier for all of you to call it, and cheaper too! Toll free!

So until I get Skype, or some such thing - my new home/roving toll free number (Free to call within North America)

The beauty of this new system is that I can have it follow me pretty much anywhere in the world - All I need is a forwarding phone I am near, or a local cell number. Local numbers are a lot cheaper in some countries - an unlocked GSM phone with a local SIM card can save tons of money - and nobody back here at home needs to worry about remembering different phone numbers while we travel.
Soon I will add voice mail extensions for Munchkin and myself as well.

So, is this to use now or does the landline to the house still work?

Sweet. Vonage has had that service for quite some time. I think the Friar had something similar for a while too. It's ULTRA convenient. You were smart to set it up. Then again, I wouldn't expect anything les coming from you.

I got me a toll-free number for my bike ride (to make it easier e.g. for potential hosts to return messages). The number I got differed by one digit from the internal tech support number for Wyndham Resorts (and a repeated digit at that--in one case it was the same as the digit before, and in the other case the digit after).

Anyhow, just thought you might want the advice to avoid getting too attached to a particular toll free number until you've seen what sort of misdial/collision situation it has.

Also, if you need a host for something along the lines of an email address to which you can send a new phone number (possibly even from SMS on a cellphone) and have it parsed by a script that updates the forwarding number for your toll-free number, I've got a server with spare capacity for that sort of thing (though I won't write the script for you).
