It all started with discussions about children. Kids start off small, but they take up exponentially more space as they grow up.

Impertinent is a big boat, but because of her narrow beam and overhangs - that which makes her graceful also makes her rather cramped. Lots of spave for 1. OK space for two and a pet. Perhaps even for two and an infant. Too small for two and a kid or more.

Mon_chou wants kids, and is willing to raise them aboard.

So I started looking at boat ads just to see what whas out there. We found a candidate. Now I am thinking of upgrading before I have even left!

The potential bigger boat is a Bruce Roberts Mauritius 43. Roomy, seaworthy, steel.

Its affordable, outfitted with a lot of gear I will need for impertinent anyway - and its in the BVIs.

What to do?  Its eating me.

I feel already like I am cheating on Impertinent. Im already thinking of flying down to look at the new boat.

Well this helps put my 7foot-itis in perspective.

I'm extremely comfortable on my A30 by myself, and still quite comfortable with just [livejournal.com profile] mirandaaskew around, but we have our 2 and a half year old daughter and her 13 year old daughter, and things feel kinda cramped when everyone's around.

I'm generally ok with with things seeming a little cramped when there's some land to scurry off to on a regular basis. I'd probably still be ok otherwise, but thinking about going off cruising when toddler A (her first initial, not just a variable name) is 12-14, I start thinking about getting an A37 with a quarter berth that we can build a door onto in order to create an additional private compartment for her.

Of course if A displays that ability of children to get incredibly attached to objects (particularly of the home variety), and insists that keeping Candy Cane is more important to her than a private compartment, then I have no interest in arguing that point with her.

Is it at all possible that you are simply getting ahead of yourself and worrying now about things that you don't realy need to worry about for a couple more years? i.e would it be possible to set sail on the grand adventure on Impertinant and then buy a new boat later when you have a) some actual real long term live aboard experience and b) a growing family to worry about "housing".

Yes, yes, I know - who am I to talk about getting ahead of yourself. But really Impertinant will do fine for the next years' worth of local excursions and the trip down south. And even much of the travel down there and around. Then (and don't forget you get some warning with this baby thing) you can upgrade when you truly feel like Impertinant no longer works for you.

Just another thought that came to my mind while reading this; there's was a cruising family a couple of decades back who set out on a steel boat, and simply built on extra length as the kids grew and the demand for space increased. You might also want to consider that approach.
